Julia Cavagna, 2016

Julia Cavagna is an Argentinian teacher,  actress and director based in the United States. She studied Sociology and classical and physical theater (EMAD, Belisario and Movement Theater Studio) where she learned about creating original collective work. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in acting in Buenos Aires (EMAD) and kept learning from different directors and mentors, who provided her with a wide variety of techniques and resources that oriented her career to the world of performative/non lineal Theater.

She has participated in the Third Annual BEAT Festival at the Brooklyn Museum and Brooklyn Navy Yard with Fixed Agency Private (I) directed by Peter Musante. On 2016 she was selected to be part of Patrice Chéreau’s Elektra at the Metropolitan Opera and the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona. In addition, she was part of the program EMERGENCY at the The Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics of NYU and was invited to participate in the last two productions of The Onderdonk Collective (Lucy in Limbo and Hunter/Gatherer) presented at the Knockdown Center.

She has founded, in collaboration with other artists, Lampazo Group, Las Pibas Theater Company, and THEATER TO THE PEOPLE (awarded the 2019 BAC Grant). As an actress, she has  performed at the Metropolitan Opera, St. Ann’s Warehouse, HERE Arts Center, Dixon Place, the Knockdown Center, among others. She has performed internationally in Argentina, Puerto Rico, Brasil, Thailand, Japan, Edinburgh and Barcelona.

These examples in her career highlight how important it is for her the notion of cooperation and the idea of having a collective approach to the different artistic expressions. She considers performance, theater and visual arts as mediums to communicate her social and political ideas, and as channels to dialogue with the audience.
